The district of Bautzen is the largest district in the Free State of Saxony in terms of area and a member of the Euro-Region Neiße. The administrative centre of the district is the town of Bautzen. 26 protected landscape areas are home to unique flora and fauna. The Sorbs living in the district, members of the smallest West Slavic people, are a special feature. The resulting bilingualism can be seen in many communities on place-name signs, signposts and in many public institutions. The famous Bautzen mustard comes from this region.
