The district of Leipzig lies to the south of the independent city of Leipzig on the border of Saxony-Anhalt in the west and Thuringia in the southwest; it is bordered to the north and east by the district of North Saxony and to the southeast by the district of Central Saxony. The district is located in the Leipzig Lowland Bay and is fairly flat. Worth mentioning are the many lakes of the Leipziger Neuseenland in the west of the district, which were created by flooding former open-cast lignite mines.
