The district of North Saxony is located in the north of the Free State of Saxony. The administrative centre is the district town of Torgau. Nature parks and the unique floodplain landscapes along the Elbe and Mulde rivers offer a well-developed network of hiking and cycling trails. The region is also close to the cultural and trade fair city of Leipzig. The decommissioning of the open-cast lignite mines in recent years has created a lake landscape around Leipzig that is unique in Germany. Leipzig/Halle Airport is of great economic importance, contributing to the development of the tourism and, above all, the logistics industry.
