The city of Leipzig, located in eastern Germany, is considered the origin of the peaceful revolution that led to German unity in 1990. Leipzig has been an important business location since the Middle Ages, a fact that hardly changed during the GDR. Leipzig was and still is an important production location for mechanical engineering and heavy industry, among other things. After German reunification, Leipzig had to cope with a population exodus, but the number of inhabitants is currently rising again.
