Religion

Saxony itself has a very strong Christian tradition for historical reasons.

Due to the history of the GDR, the majority of the population is non-denominational. Many people are therefore of the Christian faith without belonging to an official denomination, but still live Christian values. Officially, 21 % of the population are Protestant and 4 % Roman Catholic. 1.5 % belong to the free Christian and Orthodox communities. The Jewish community is represented by less than 1 %. The Muslim faith can be practised in Saxony, although the Muslim population share in Saxony is very low at less than 1%.
